Popular Hardwood Floor Species

RED OAK: Very popular. Resists wear and has a high shock resistance. More than 200 subspecies provide great grain and color variation.

BIRCH:  Hard and stiff. Extremely strong and has an excellent shock resistance. Several popular subspecies include yellow birch, sweet birch, paper birch. Yellow Birch is what you’ll typically find used for flooring.

MAPLE: Very strong. Typically used in bowling alleys and athletic floors for this reason. Very resistant to abrasive wear.

PINE: Soft but fairly durable. Not as resistant to scuffs and abrasions as the “harder” hardwood varieties. While often used for flooring, it may not be suitable for all applications thanks to it’s softer properties.

WHITE OAK: Harder and more durable than red oak. Also has considerable variation in grain texture and color. These variations aren’t as obvious as they are with red oak.

Finishes and Sheens

Another decision you’ll need to make, whether installing or refinishing your hardwood floor, will be finish and sheen. Which of the following best fits your style? Each will have pros and cons. It will be up to you to decide which finish or sheen meets your needs.

Hardwood Floor Finishes

OIL-BASED POLYURETHANE: Very popular due to it’s low cost and easy application. You’ve seen these floors for years as they’ve been popular for decades. However, oil-based poly floors tend to yellow over time. They also contain harmful V.O.C.’s (volatile organic compounds) that can be dangerous. This type of floor also has a slower drying time meaning your off your floor longer than other finish types.

WATER-BASED:  It’s a newer product that came about thanks to more environmentally friendly needs among floor finishes. These finishes contain a much lower V.O.C. signature and dry fast. They don’t yellow over time, so you keep a consistent color throughout the life of your floor.

WATER-BASED U.V.: Essentially the same benefits of the regular water-based finish but cures in just 2 hours. This means essentially no “down time” for your flooring surface. When the floor is done, you move back in! It is more expensive per square foot.

Hardwood Floor Sheens

The options here are similar to those you are used to when buying paint. How do you want your floor to look?

MATTE: Gives the floor an appearance that “no sheen” exists. It keeps the wood looking as natural as possible. Also great at hiding pet hair and scratches. Good choice for pet owners!

SATIN: Very popular sheen. Provides a warm feel with a minimum amount of shine. You can see that there is a sheen, but the reflection is minor. Not as easy to clean and maintain as matte, but pretty close.

SEMI-GLOSS: Great for certain types of homes. Older homes that benefit from reflections do well with semi-gloss sheens. The floor looks “thicker” than a matte or satin sheen.
