Highlands Ranch Floor

Hardwood floors are durable, but they don’t last forever. It’s especially true when they lack proper care throughout the years. One of the perks of having hardwood in your home is that you can refinish it to make it look practically brand new again.

When you have us refinish the floors in your Boulder home, you will notice that all the minor scratches and most of the major scratches will disappear because of the sanding process. You’ll get a sheen that is free from dirt and grime. It will be even and elegant.

Popular Hardwood Floor Species

You may not realize it, but there is a lot of versatility in hardwood flooring. If you are having new floors installed, then you have many wonderful wood species to choose from. Here are a few of the more popular types of wood in  Boulder area homes. If you don’t find something that speaks to you on the list, then simply give our office a call and we’ll set up an in-home consultation to discuss ideas with you.

RED OAK: This species of wood is very popular. It resists wear wonderfully and has a high shock resistance, too. Red oak includes more than 200 subspecies that provide great color and grain variation.

BIRCH: This wood is hard, stiff, and extremely strong. It also has an excellent shock resistance. Sweet Birch, Yellow Birch and Paper Birch are a few of the subspecies you will find in this family. Yellow Birch is what you typically find in flooring. It is heavy and strong, close-grained, and even- textured. There is a wide color variation that ranges from reddish brown to creamy white.

MAPLE: This type of wood is very strong and because of this, it is often used in athletic floors and bowling alleys. It has a nice, creamy color, smooth grain pattern, and stains nicely.

PINE: This is a softer, yet durable wood, but it is not as resistant to scrapes and scuffs as other, harder species. It is often used for flooring, but may not be appropriate for all applications. Pine is of medium weight with good strength and elasticity. The properties of this type of wood depend upon the density of the annual growth rings. If the proportion of summerwood is higher, then it will be heavier.

WHITE OAK: Harder and more durable than Red Oak, this species has considerable variation in grain texture and color. These variations are not as noticeable as those in Red Oak.

Finishes and Sheens

Whether you’re  installing or refinishing, you need to decide on a finish or sheen. Each one has its pros and cons, but which one matches your style? It’s completely up to you.

Hardwood Floor Finishes

Here are some of the more popular choices for hardwood finishes in the Boulder area.

OIL BASED POLYURETHANE: This is a very popular choice due to it’s easy application and low cost. This has been a popular option for decades but unfortunately floors finished with this product yellow over time. They also contain harmful and dangerous V.O.C.s. It also has a slow drying time.

WATER-BASED: This is a newer, environmentally friendly alternative that contains lower levels of V.O.C.s and dries quickly. Also, they don’t yellow over time.

WATER-BASED U.V.: This is basically the same as water-based finishes only it’s cure time is only 2 hours long. It is more expensive per square foot.

Hardwood Floor Sheens

The options here are similar to the options you see when you’re buying paint.

MATTE: This makes your floor look like there are no sheens. It keeps wood looking natural and it’s great at hiding pet hair and scratches.

SATIN: This provides a warm feel with minimal shine. It’s not as easy to clean or maintain than matte, but it’s close.

SEMI-GLOSS: This is great for older homes that benefit from reflections. It makes the floor look “thicker” than mattes or satins.
