POPULAR HARDWOOD FLOORING SPECIES

One of the best aspects of having a hardwood floor is the versatility you get. You have many species to choose from if you are installing new hardwood floors. Here are some of the more popular types of wood in the Elizabeth area. If you don’t see something that interests you, give us a call and we’ll come visit you in person to discuss your ideas.

Red Oak

This is a very popular choice among homeowners. Red Oak resists wear and has a high shock resistance. There are over 200 subspecies to provide grain and color variation.

Birch

This species is hard, stiff, and extremely strong. There is a great shock resistance with this wood. There are several popular subspecies that include Yellow Birch, Sweet Birch, and Paper Birch. You will typically find that Yellow Birch is the one used for flooring.

Maple

Maple is very resistant to abrasive wear and very strong. For this reason it is usually used in bowling alleys and other athletic floors.

Pine

This one is soft but also fairly durable. It’s not as resistant to scuffs and abrasions as the other harder species are. Still, it is often used in flooring but may not be suitable for all applications due to its softer nature.

White Oak

The species is even harder and more durable than Red Oak. It also has a considerable amount of variations in color and grain though they are not as obvious as with Red Oak.

FINISHES AND SHEENS

Whether you are refinishing your floor or installing a new one, there’s other decisions that you need to make. These are finish and sheen. Which of the following best fits your style? They each have pros and cons. It is your decision to make which would be best for you.

Hardwood Floor Finishes

OIL-BASED POLYURETHANE:

This is a very popular choice because it is fairly low cost and easy to apply. It’s been popular for decades and we’re sure that you’ve seen these floors before. Unfortunately, oil based polyurethane finishes yellow over time. They also contain harmful volatile organic compounds, or VOCs and this can be dangerous. This type of finish also has a longer drying time, so you have to stay off of your floor longer than you would if you had used other finishes.

WATER BASED:

This is a new type of product that came out due to environmentally friendly needs. These finishes dry fast and have a much lower VOC signature. You also get to keep consistent color through the years as they don’t yellow over time.

Hardwood Floor Sheens

How do you want your floor to look? The options here are similar to those you have when you’re buying paint.

MATTE:

This type of Sheen makes it look like your floor has no sheen at all. It keeps the wood looking natural and helps to hide pet hairs and scuff marks. It’s a great choice for pet owners.

SATIN

With this type, you can see that there is a sheen. It is a very popular choice, providing a warm feel with minimal shine. It’s not as easy to clean and maintain as matte is, but it’s close.

SEMI-GLOSS

This is a great type of Sheen for older homes that benefit from reflections. With semi-gloss, the floor looks “thicker” than with matte or satin.
